Plane Playlist

Wednesday, December 30, 2015

Pretty much every fibre of my being wishes I could strut through the airport like Karlie Kloss on a good day - actually, even Karlie Kloss on a bad day. But, reality tells me that airport-Gwen will not suddenly grow ten inches in height, shrink like six sixes in jeans, and make $15 million overnight. So, while airport-Karlie can make her way through every terminal in the world glowing and stress-free and first class, airport-Gwen is likely going to be sweaty, stressed out, and showing the season's latest trend of crumbs from a Starbucks croissant all down the front of my shirt.

exactly what I won't look like this week
It's all good, though, because I will be beating airport-Karlie in one thing: my playlist.
Okay, Karlie Kloss probably also has a really good taste in music, but let me give myself this one. I have nothing else.
Anyone who knows me knows that music has been one of the most important and consistent things in my life since I was in middle school. I don't have any claims to musical talent or any knowledge of musical technique or theory, but I do, if I may say so myself, have a really sick taste in music - mostly because it's insanely eclectic and really, really bizarre.

So, before I take off for the UK, I thought it would be fun to share a playlist that'll get me through the day of traveling. And, since I don't have the space, time, or patience to make a playlist that will last for the entire flight, what follows is a list of the top 20 songs I'll be listening to while I'm cruising at 30,000 feet over the Atlantic. (In no particular order, one song per artist, and also mostly new music or music that I just discovered because if I started going back in time we'd be here forever.)

Embrace it.

Over and Out

Saturday, December 19, 2015

So, it's been ages. But I'm back again, and this time, hopefully, it's for real. This blog is changing themes a little bit as my life does the same - for the next five months, I'm leaving New York and moving to Edinburgh, Scotland to study English literature at the University of Edinburgh!

I'm headed out all alone - my dad is traveling with me for the first few days, but after that, it's all me, as I don't know a single person headed here this semester. Beyond that, I'm studying at a school that feels way out of my comfort zone with over 35,000 students (for reference, my school at home has 2,500) and a ranking as seventeenth best university in the world (my school at home isn't even the seventeenth best in the country). But, I'm excited as well. I've got friends all around Europe this semester (London, Paris, Madrid, Germany), and plans to make the most of this experience.

Hopefully, I'll be blogging regularly while I'm abroad and hopefully I'll be back here with success stories. New year, new country, probably the same me. But maybe I'll come back a little different. Who knows.

Catch ya on the other side of the Atlantic!

The Boys are Back

Sunday, September 20, 2015

It's been ages since I've blogged, and I don't have much of an excuse beyond the start of a new school year taking up most of my time. It's my junior year and I'm only planning on spending one semester on campus, hopefully going abroad in the spring, and so I'm trying to make the most of it.

This year is exciting for a few reasons, but my favorite thing at the moment is that I'm living in an apartment for the first time ever! Finally, I get to leave the dorms and live in one of the gorgeous on campus apartments that are probably more like townhouses to be honest. I live with 4 other lovely girls and so far I'm loving pretty much everything, aside from our lack of a dishwasher.

I don't feel ready to post photos of our entire house yet, because we haven't quite finished setting it up, but I'm in love with my bedroom this year and thought I would make a quick post to share it. I always pride myself on my rooms at school, but this year is probably my favorite. I really got to express my minimalist aesthetic this year and embraced the cool, muted colors I love the most.

This is the best photo I could get of the whole room, but the back corner where my closet and chair sit wouldn't fit! Check out under the cut for more photos + details!

Home Away from Home

Tuesday, August 4, 2015

I made a trip way up north this weekend to one of my favorite places on earth - Montreal. I've got loads of family up there, including a second cousin who's like a best friend to me, and it always feels like coming home.

sitting on the steps in front of Mangiafoco, the restaurant where I met Jeff Stinco a few years ago in Montreal's Old Port. Jeff owns the place.

I'm kind of an elitist when it comes to the cities I love. Being that I'm from New York, I don't think there's any city in the world that can top the city that never sleeps. My home is a music, fashion, culture, food, economic, capital of the world, and I am so lucky to have been raised in its light.

Montreal doesn't come close to comparing to New York, but it always feels special to me. Maybe it's my family, who always take me in with open arms and feed me plenty and make me laugh all night. Or maybe it's the beautiful Old Port, where I once met Jeff Stinco, a guitarist in one of my favorite bands Simple Plan. Whatever it is, the place feels like a home away from home for me and my heart always feels so full when I get to visit.

my cousin Felicia and I

I didn't take as many photos as I should have this time around - I was preoccupied with talking and catching up and eating (eating lots) and it didn't seem to cross my mind. I also hate looking like a tourist, especially in a city where I don't speak the language (see: the fact that many Quebecois will give you a nasty looking for trying to address them in English) and thus I tend not to stop in the middle of the street to take photos. But, that's okay. I felt like I was where I was supposed to be.

I had my first clubbing experience - I'm not legal in the States, and I'm pretty much a homebody so the idea of it never appealed to me, but I had fun. Everything seems fun when I'm with my cousins, and I always find myself wishing I could spend even more time with them. I shopped at Garage, my cousin Felicia's favorite store, and discovered how well their jeans fit me, plus found the perfect black dress that I've been hunting down for ages. I ate enough lasagna to feed a small village, plus experienced the wonder of a taco pie. I also watched a scary movie that made it hard to sleep at night, and drove through Montreal at 2 in the morning with the windows down, the music loud, and a bunch of my favorite people in the car with me.

my cousins and I at Pinq, the club we hit up in downtown Montreal

I have every intention of going back, as usual. I feel a deeper pang every time I leave the beautiful city. Then, I see the New York City skyline rising in front of me and I remember why I am where I am. Sometimes, I suppose, you need to head somewhere else to remind yourself why the place you come from is the best in the world. It's just a bonus if the place you're visiting may very well be second best.

Check under the cut to see some of the very few photos I took on my trip. Remind me to take more next time.

Times 5 (1)

Saturday, July 11, 2015

Hi! I feel like it's been so long since I've been here! I've had a really busy few weeks, at my internship and otherwise, and I haven't been home enough to make a good post. It's way past time, though, so here I am with something new!

I decided to start something new this week, which I'm calling Times 5! It's, essentially, the same outfit five times, accessorized differently. It's a really cool brainstorming process for me and I wanted to share it!

The idea is that you can make the same outfit look drastically different and fit drastically different scenarios depending on how you accessorize it. It definitely highlights the important of accessorizing and how it makes, breaks, and decides an outfit!

The first outfit I'm accessorizing is a really basic outfit, very similar to what I wear pretty regularly - a black shirt, and black jeans. I used a gorgeous pair of Rag & Bone /Jean that I'm obsessed with right now. I love the placement of the rips and I think they look gorgeous in Polyvore sets! The top is a really cute strappy cami that I wish I could wear, though it would be hard without a bra. I love it for these sets though!

I didn't use anything twice, except for the shirt and jeans, of course, which I used five times! At first I thought this was going to be a challenge, but at it actually ended up being a challenge to stop after five! I don't think I'm ready to take it to ten yet, but maybe one day!
Check out the sets below and under the cut for a little breakdown of each outfit. I hope you enjoy, and look out for more of these in the future!

Accessories Edit

Sunday, June 28, 2015

I've recently discovered that my infatuation with fashion is, more than anything, an infatuation with accessories. I love clothes but I'm realizing that what I really love, what I really get excited about, is accessories. Shoes, bags, jewelry (especially rings), hats - these are the things that I'm usually lusting after. An outfit isn't really complete or unique without accessories anyway!

When it comes to wearing accessories myself, I'm pretty conservative. I do wear six rings (four on one hand, two on the other) but they're the same six every day. I wear the same necklace that my best friend got me for Christmas every day, along with the same Casio watch (that I love dearly) and the same sunglasses. As I'm working an unpaid internship this summer, I don't really have much money to be spending on accessories (or clothes, or anything, really) at the moment, but I've decided to put together a sort of accessories lust list to get myself thinking about branching out more!

Here are the things I've been lusting over lately, things I've been adding to my sets, and things I would love to add to my wardrobe!

A little more commentary under the cut as well!

What's In My Bag: Internship Edition

Friday, June 19, 2015

Since I’m two weeks into my internship, I thought it was about time to do a What’s in My Bag: Internship Edition post! I know What’s in my Bags are usually really popular on Youtube, but I don’t see why it can’t be adapted to blog format! Here’s my attempt!

THE BAG: I commute about half an hour to 45 minutes into midtown Manhattan every Monday-Thursday for my internship at a parenting magazine. My bag is more or less the only thing I bring with me – it’s hot, so I like to keep the things I’m lugging around to a minimum. Right now, I’m using a Rebecca Minkoff M.A.B.Satchel in black with silver hardware and I’m absolutely in love with it! I’ve been seriously crushing on all things Rebecca Minkoff since I got my Mini M.A.B. in white, and this bag hasn’t disappointed. It meets all my criteria at the moment – it’s got short straps and long straps, a zipper, pockets, and silver hardware – and it can hold nearly everything I need it to.

Obsession of the Moment: Calum Hood

Sunday, May 31, 2015

Menswear style is a huge inspiration to me. I often wear dresses and skirts because they're so comfortable, but if tight as hell skinny jeans were just as easy to move in, I'd be wearing them every single day. Lately, I've been absolutely loving Calum Hood's (bassist and vocalist in 5 Seconds of Summer) everything - his style, his aesthetic, his life. His color palette is exactly the kind I live for - blacks and greys and whites, sometimes with a little pop of color. While I'm usually a Michael girl when it comes to 5SOS, I haven't been able to get enough of Calum lately, so here I am.

I would say Calum's style can be characterized by his ripped skinny jeans, (black, of course) sneakers, combat boots, beanies, band tshirts, snapbacks, and flannels. His essentials are pretty similar to mine, which might explain why I've been crushing on his look so much lately. Recently, he's also been wearing round frame sunglasses, which are my go-to sunnies at the moment as well! They compliment his face perfectly, and inspired me to buy my own pair.

Calum loves beer and dogs and good music as well, which are just more things I relate to.  I'm loving absolutely everything about him at the moment, and I felt like I had to share it somewhere! I've made a collage of some of my favorite looks that Calum has stepped out in (think cozy oversized tops + super tight jeans + a hat) and a few sets of inspired looks to try to deal with my obsession in a healthy way. I'm also including some of my favorite Calum tweets and looks that didn't make it into the collage because, you know, why not?

Enjoy!!

Inspiration

Thursday, May 21, 2015

One of my biggest career dreams is to work in the magazine world. I’m completely fascinated by magazines, and I take a lot of my inspiration from the articles and images in my favorites. I’m subscribed to Marie Claire, ELLE, Vogue, and Teen Vogue, and every month I spend countless hours looking through their pages. I’m totally enamored by almost everything I see. I know lots of people make inspiration boards and walls with magazine clippings, but because I don’t have enough wall space, I make an inspiration book.

After I finish reading my favorite magazines I go through them again to cut out the things that inspire me. Every spread in my book – a big sketchbook that I bought at the bookstore – is like a miniature moodboard.

My book is one of my favorite ways to pass time, and I love looking at it and thinking about one day being part of the team that creates something so inspirational. I really wanted to share some of my favorite pages in my book in the hopes of sharing some inspiration and excitement! Enjoy!!

Summer '15 Inspiration

Untitled #185

Untitled #185 by gwenalmighty featuring white tops

Even though it’s still mid May, I wrapped up my semester last Friday, meaning summer has been in full swing for me since last week! Summer has always been the season I struggle with most when it comes to style – New York summers are hot and humid and generally very miserable – so I decided that my first post would be a sort of summer style moodboard to help myself get excited about what I’m going to wear this season.

My summer inspiration is coming from all over the place, but I’m really loving white and metallics, which is a sort of 180 from my usual all black everything look. I’ve never been super confident in white, but this summer I’m hoping to overcome that! I’m also loving fringe, destroyed denim, muscle tees, and, as usual, stripes.

I’ve put together a little inspiration set together to get my mind into the right place. I think my obsession with bags, shoes, and sunnies is super evident here. Obviously, it’s not a full list of all the things I’m loving for the summer, but rather an aesthetic look at how I’m envisioning my summer wardrobe.

Here's my small inspiration set for this summer! Enjoy!
